Name: Andrew McMillan Current home town: Sydney
Current/previous employer and position: WorleyParsons – Engineer (Urban Infrastructure group)
What has been your involvement with EWB in the past?:
Though I’ve been interested in EWB’s work since uni, I’ve just been involved with the Tonle Sap TAN for a short time, and before that attended a few EWB fundraising events.
Where are you going and what will you be doing on your volunteer placement?:
I’m going to work with the Byrraju Foundation in Hyderabad, India. They have a drinking water treatment program for rural villages in Andhra Pradesh, and my role will be based around assisting the Foundation to optimise the design of these systems.
What are you most looking forward to?:
I’m looking forward to applying my engineering skills in a development context, making new friends and learning about their culture, and building up my resistance to spicy foods!
What are you most nervous about?:
I’m nervous about how I will be able to help a Foundation who are already so well established and who’ve already won international awards for their drinking water program.
What else do you like to do outside work and EWB activities?:
I like to see live music and theatre, go sailing/cycling/beaching, do voluntary work, and of course eat and drink with family and friends.
Anything else you want to share with the EWB community?:
I’m thrilled to have been given the opportunity to go to India on a placement, and thank all the EWB community for their support and efforts.
If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?:
Get people thinking about how to be good world citizens.
