For six years, EWB’s Humanitarian Design Summits have created a transformative learning experience like no other. These study tours challenge thinking, push boundaries, and create first-hand understanding of just how important a role engineers can play in creating positive change. With these ‘on location’ tours currently on hiatus due to the pandemic, the Digital Design Summit offers an alternative, equally expansive experience, in an online environment.

Participating students will gain experience in:

  • Humanitarian engineering skills and insights
  • Appropriate technology best-practice
  • Designing in resource constrained environments
  • Working with community and clients on needs analysis and problem definition
  • Evaluating solutions including maintenance, materials and cost
  • Rapid prototyping and development
  • Client engagement and communication
  • Cross-cultural engagement, teamwork and project management.
Participation in the Design Summit program is secured by your $500 deposit and a $1,000 program fee. Students may be eligible for financial assistance through an NCP grant.
Participants on the Digital Design Summit will undertake up to 60 hours of engineering work experience during the three-week program.

Eligible Applicants

The EWB Digital Design Summit is open to students currently enrolled in an undergraduate technical field of study in Australia or New Zealand.

You are aware of the global challenges we face and see the opportunity you have to contribute, using your burgeoning career and work as a tool for positive impact. You want to go beyond the theory and see another side of the conversation, to see how your technical skills can make an impact on the change you want to see in the world.

The Impact Intensive: Vanuatu

An EWB Digital Design Summit, 18 January – 25 February 2022

Over 18 days, participants will be immersed in a real-world learning experience focused on engineering and design, learning from and working with Ni-Vanuatu communities. Students will engage in project-based initiatives and be mentored by a diverse group of professional humanitarian engineers.

The Impact Intensive Digital Design Summit is a deep-dive into engineering practice, creating the space and time to immerse in a real-world and complex learning environment. The experience aims to complement and expand the boundaries of the university experience. It also seeks to shape the next generation of socio-technical engineering leaders.
